Important information for saxophonists
Frequently asked questions
Which saxophone is most suitable for beginners?+
The alto saxophone is the best choice for most beginners. It is smaller and lighter than the tenor, requires less finger stretching, and is generally cheaper as a beginner instrument. Furthermore, the range of beginner instruments and teaching materials for the alto is the largest. Adult beginners who specifically want to learn the tenor can also start directly on the tenor.
What is the difference between an alto and tenor saxophone?+
The alto saxophone is smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the tenor, making it the better starting choice for most beginners. The tenor sounds a fifth lower and requires slightly more lung capacity, but it is not more difficult to learn. For children under twelve, the alto is almost always the best choice due to its more compact size. Do you specifically want to learn the tenor? That is possible. But if you are still unsure, start on the alto.
How much does a good saxophone cost?+
The price of a saxophone varies depending on the brand and quality. Beginner alto saxophone models usually start at around €1,000. Professional instruments can run into several thousand euros. At Adams, you will find saxophones for every level and budget: from beginner to professional models.
Can I test a saxophone before purchasing it?+
Yes. At Adams Music Centre, you can extensively test saxophones in our test rooms in Ittervoort and Lummen. This allows you to compare models and discover which instrument suits you best. Do you want to be sure that a specific model is ready? Then make an appointment in advance.
Which saxophone brands are the best?+
Adams stocks saxophones from renowned brands such as Selmer, Yamaha, and Yanagisawa: brands known for their quality and reliability. For beginners, we recommend New York Symphonic, a brand that offers a solid start at a competitive price. The best choice depends on your budget, playing style, and level. Our specialists will help you find the right model.
Do I need accessories for a saxophone?+
Yes. In addition to your saxophone, you will need at least a mouthpiece, reeds, a ligature, and a strap or harness. A ligature attaches the reed to the mouthpiece and affects the sound response. For maintenance, a pull-through swab and cork grease are indispensable. At Adams, most beginner instruments come with the basic necessities included.
