What are woodwind instruments?
Woodwind instruments are wind instruments in which the sound is produced by air vibrating against an edge or a reed. They are often used in orchestras, wind bands and jazz bands.
Which instruments belong to the woodwind family?
How does it work?
With woodwind instruments, air is blown through or across a mouthpiece:
- With a flute, the air vibrates against a sharp edge.
- With a clarinet and saxophone, a single reed vibrates.
- With an oboe and bassoon, two reeds vibrate against each other (double reed).
Although some instruments, such as the saxophone, are made of metal, they still belong to the woodwind family because of the way the sound is produced.
Which saxophone should I choose?
At our workshops in Ittervoort and Lummen, we are often asked which saxophone is the best choice for beginners. For most new players, the alto saxophone is the most logical option: its size and weight are easy to handle, and it is the model most commonly used by music schools. The tenor saxophone requires a little more breath support and a larger hand stretch, but it is often preferred for its warmer, fuller sound, particularly in jazz and pop. Soprano and sopranino saxophones are more difficult to play in tune and are generally purchased later as a second instrument. Still unsure? Visit us in Ittervoort or Lummen. All saxophone sizes are ready to play, and our specialists, with more than 50 years of combined experience in sales and maintenance, will be pleased to help you make the right choice.
Maintenance and repair
A woodwind instrument requires regular maintenance to preserve its tone and playability. Minor key adjustments and replacing pads are among the most common maintenance tasks we carry out. We generally recommend a complete overhaul, during which the entire instrument is thoroughly inspected, after several years of intensive use. If you are unsure whether your instrument is due for maintenance, bring it to Ittervoort or Lummen for an assessment by our repair department.
