What are woodwind instruments?
Woodwind instruments are wind instruments in which the sound is produced by air vibrating against an edge or a reed. They are often used in orchestras, wind bands and jazz bands.

Which instruments belong to the woodwind family?

• Flute
• Clarinet

• Saxophone

How does it work?
With woodwind instruments, air is blown through or across a mouthpiece:

• With a flute, the air vibrates against a sharp edge.
• With a clarinet and saxophone, a single reed vibrates.
• With an oboe and bassoon, two reeds vibrate against each other (double reed).

Although some instruments, such as the saxophone, are made of metal, they still belong to the woodwind family because of the way the sound is produced.
