What are the differences between cymbal types?
Buying a cymbal starts with understanding the different types. Hi-hats form the rhythmic foundation of any drum kit: two cymbals on a stand that you open and close with your foot. A crash cymbal produces a short, explosive sound for musical accents, typically in sizes from 14 to 18 inches. A ride cymbal (18,22 inch) is heavier and offers more sustain, ideal for steady rhythmic patterns.
In addition to the basic types, Cymbal Street also offers china cymbals with their distinctive trashy sound, compact splash cymbals for quick accents, bell cymbals for bright, focused tones, and an extensive selection of effect cymbals such as stacks, perforated, and sizzle models.
Not sure which type suits your playing style? Our staff, drummers with many years of experience, are happy to advise you, in-store or by phone.
| Type of cymbal | Description |
|---|---|
| Hi-hat | The rhythmic heart of the drum kit. Two cymbals on a stand, operated with a foot pedal. |
| Crash | Short, explosive strike for accents. Sizes 14" , 18", thinner than a ride. |
| Ride | Large, heavy cymbal (18" , 22") for steady rhythms. More sustain than a crash. |
| China | Inverted edge, aggressive, trashy sound. Popular in rock and metal. |
| Splash | Small (8" , 12"), short and punchy. Ideal as an accent cymbal next to a crash. |
| Effect | Stack cymbals, perforated, sizzle , cymbals that produce a unique special sound. |
Frequently asked questions about cymbals
What is the difference between a crash and a ride cymbal?+
A crash cymbal is thinner and smaller (14" , 18"), designed for short, explosive accents. A ride cymbal is larger (18" , 22") and heavier, suitable for steady rhythmic patterns with more sustain. Both are essential in a complete drum kit setup.
Which cymbal is best for a beginner?+
A cymbal set with hi-hats, a crash, and a ride is the most practical choice for beginners. Brands such as Sabian SBR and Meinl HCS offer good quality at an affordable price. In our store, we are happy to advise you based on your budget and musical style.
Can I try out cymbals before purchasing?+
Yes. In both our store in Ittervoort (NL) and in Lummen (BE), we have a space where you can test cymbals before making a decision. You can schedule a visit via our appointment request page.
What is the difference between Zildjian A and Zildjian K?+
The Zildjian A series has a bright, versatile sound suitable for pop, rock, and beginners. The K series is darker, more complex in tone, and favored by jazz and studio musicians. The K Custom line goes a step further in character and warmth.
How do I maintain my cymbals?+
Use a dedicated cymbal cleaner (we carry Zildjian and Meinl cymbal cleaners, among others) and a soft cloth. After playing, wipe sweat from the surface. Do not strike cymbals directly on the edge: always use a nylon sleeve or felt on the stand. Store them in a cymbal bag during transport.
