The piccolo is the smallest instrument in the flute family. In both the symphony orchestra and the wind orchestra, the piccolo is often used to add extra color to the music, usually in combination with the melodies of the woodwinds and/or strings. Because it is the smallest instrument in the orchestra, it can easily stand out above the other instruments with its high notes.
