How do I keep my flute in top condition?
A well-maintained flute not only plays better but also lasts longer and looks nicer. A simple routine of cleaning, proper storage, and maintenance will extend the lifespan of your flute. Here are the key maintenance tips to keep your flute in the best condition.
Clean your flute after every playing session.
Moisture and dirt can damage the flute and the pads. Make sure to clean your flute thoroughly after each playing session by drying the inside of the flute well. Clean the outside with a silver cloth, which is usually provided with the flute. If you don't have one, purchase a silver cloth for jewelry. Note: Only clean the parts you can easily reach (so not between the keys). Gently clean the top of each key one by one. NEVER use silver polish or water!
Prevent damage to the pads
The pads under the keys are vulnerable to moisture and dirt. Protect them by:
- Not leaving any moisture or dirt on the keys – Sugar-containing food (drinks or snacks) is disastrous for pads! Ensure your mouth and hands are clean.
- Not exerting hard pressure on the keys when storing the flute.
- Drying the inside of your flute well after use to prevent the pads from sticking or molding.
If a key sticks, you can carefully resolve it with a pad of paper (special blotting paper without powder) or a blotting sheet to remove the sticky edge. Note: Never pull the blotting sheet from under a tightly pressed key, just blot.
Use your case
Always store your flute in a suitable case. Do not leave your flute loose in a bag or on a table. If your flute falls, the keys and mechanism can bend.
Make sure your case is closed and use a protective cover / sleeve with the case for extra protection against impacts.
Avoid extreme temperatures – do not leave your flute in the sun or in a cold car. Temperature fluctuations can affect the tuning of the flute, especially when the material of the flute starts to expand or contract. This is particularly important for wooden flutes and headjoints, which can crack due to large differences in humidity and temperature.
Hold your instrument the right way!
- Avoid unnecessary pressure on the keys when picking up and assembling the flute.
- Hold your flute by the tubes (headjoint, body, footjoint) and not by the keys.
- Do not wear jewelry (such as rings or bracelets) while playing to prevent scratches.
- Use the correct posture while playing.
Have your flute maintained regularly.
Even with good maintenance, a flute occasionally needs a professional check-up. A specialized flute repairer can resolve small issues before they become major defects. Therefore, have your flute adjusted and checked by a professional certified for your brand of flute at least once a year.
As a final tip, keep listening to your flute. If the mechanism starts making noise or the sound quality deteriorates, visit a professional repairer.
