How do I clean my flute?

By cleaning your flute regularly, you keep it in good condition. This prevents dirt buildup and oxidation.

Cleaning the inside

During playing, condensation accumulates on the inside of the flute, which can cause corrosion and damage to the pads. Therefore, it is important to clean the inside thoroughly after each playing session.

Requirements:

Steps:

  • Attach the cloth to the eye of the cleaning rod and wrap it around. This prevents metal-on-metal contact inside your flute.
  • Insert the rod carefully into the flute and twist it to absorb moisture. Do this for all three parts: the headjoint, the body, and the footjoint.
  • Always let the flute dry completely before storing it.

Note:

Do not use paper cloths or cleaning agents, as these can leave residue or damage the inside of the body.

Requirements:

Steps:

After each playing session, wipe the outside of the flute with a dry, soft cloth to remove fingerprints and dirt.

Use a silver polishing cloth if there is visible tarnish (oxidation). Gently rub the silver parts, but avoid the pads and tone holes. These can be damaged by the polishing agent impregnated in the silver polishing cloth.

Note:

Never use regular silver polish or abrasive cleaners, as these can cause scratches and damage the pads.

Extra maintenance tips

  • Do not touch the pads with damp cloths or cleaning agents – they can wear out faster as a result.
  • Avoid excessive cleaning of the mechanism – this can affect the adjustment.
  • Wash your hands before playing to reduce greasy fingers and dirt on the flute.
  • Always store your flute dry in the case to prevent tarnish and moisture issues.
  • Have your flute professionally checked annually.
