Alexander’s aim was a reed which produced a warm, resonant "buzz", good projection, an even scale throughout the registers, and a wide dynamic range. In other words they wanted this reed to provide a reed that was free blowing, capable of quick and accurate articulation, and with immediate presence. These reeds fit the concept of the "American" style single cut reeds, but with a more developed heart and rear vamp area to produce a really big sound.

Alexander developed this reed together with renowned mouthpiece maker Ralph Morgan. The combination of a new design, influenced by traditional reed making concepts, and the highest grade of cane Alexander could find became known as the original Alexander Superial with its yellow tin.
