Trumpet accessories
As a trumpet player, there are several accessories that can make your life as a musician easier. On this page, we'll go over these products with you and help guide you, so you can create your own sound in the way that you want. Mouthpieces and mutes, in particular, have a big impact on your sound. But we'll also discuss cases, stands, and maintenance items with you.
Mouthpiece
In addition to your trumpet and your playing, the mouthpiece affects your sound. The mouthpiece is where the sound is shaped by your lips and the dimensions of the mouthpiece. The biggest difference between trumpet mouthpieces is the depth of the cup. A shallow cup gives a bright, sharp sound and makes it easier to play high notes. A deep cup, on the other hand, makes the sound softer and warmer. Read more here about how brass instrument mouthpieces work. Beginner trumpets usually come with a mouthpiece that is perfectly fine to start with. Later on, a teacher or sales specialist can help you find a mouthpiece that suits you and your sound.
Adams recommends beginner players to consider the 3C mouthpiece by Vincent Bach. The medium cup depth is ideal to start with. Don’t forget to get a mouthpiece brush to keep your new mouthpiece clean.
Mutes
Musicians use mutes to adjust the sound or create effects. There are also practice mutes that dampen the sound so you can practice without disturbing your housemates. In the beginning, you can usually do fine without a mute, but after a while, it’s a good idea to get a straight mute and a cup mute and experiment with the different effects they produce. You can read about other types of mutes in this post.
Stand
When you're practicing and suddenly get interrupted, it's useful to have a place to quickly set your trumpet down. A trumpet stand is very handy in this situation. You place the bell over the cone of the stand, and you can safely leave your trumpet for a few minutes.

Case
A trumpet usually comes with a case, but often this case only has space for the instrument and can only be carried by the handle. If you prefer to carry your case as a backpack and have a separate bag for your accessories, we recommend a gig bag. If you'd like a case that fits everything or need extra protection, a hard case is a better option for you. These cases can often be equipped with an extra set of backpack straps.
Adams recommends:
- Marcus Bonna hard cases
- Protec gig bags
Maintenance
Of course, you want to keep your trumpet in tiptop condition. Check out our page on trumpet maintenance to learn what you can do yourself to keep your instrument in good shape. Below are our recommendations for oil, grease, and cleaning tools for trumpets.
Oil and Grease
For a trumpet, you need two types of oil: one for the valves and one for the trigger slides on the first and third valves. For all other slides and tubes, we recommend using slide grease, which allows you to separate the tubes without any trouble. We suggest using trigger oil for the trigger slides instead of slide grease, as this makes the triggers run just a bit smoother. However, if you don't have trigger oil, use slide grease, not valve oil. You can read more about how and when to use oil and grease on our maintenance page.
Swabs
Many issues with your instrument can be prevented by keeping it dry and occasionally polishing it. Swabs are especially essential for cleaning the inside of your trumpet. You can read more about how to use swabs effectively on our maintenance page.
