YAMAHA Saxophones

"Expressive Tones, Deep Warm Sounds & Accurate Intonation"

Yamaha offers a complete line of saxophones to suit every level of player from the beginning band student to the seasoned pro. Through the Yamaha ideology of 'vertical integration', the highest level Custom saxophone models are designed first, and elements of those models are carried down into the professional, intermediate, and even standard level saxophones. Through this process, Yamaha designers take great care to make sure that each saxophone model combines the ideal levels of form, function and value for the saxophonist who will be the recipient of that instrument.

Student Series

Yamaha divides its saxophones into levels: student models for beginners, intermediate models such as the YAS-480, and professional and Custom models for experienced players. When designing, Yamaha starts with its top models and then carries parts and insights over to the lower series. As a result, even an entry-level model benefits from the experience gained with professional saxophones.

The YAS-280 is the student model. It is made for someone who is just starting out: relatively light, comfortable in the hand and built so that a tone comes out easily. That helps in the first years, when you are mainly working on embouchure, breath support and fingerings. Music schools and concert bands often choose it as a first instrument, including as a rental instrument, because the keywork can take a knock and needs little adjustment.

Yamaha YAS-280 and YTS-280: alto or tenor?

The YAS-280 (also written as YAS 280) is the alto saxophone in Eb. The YTS-280 is the same student series as a tenor saxophone in Bb. Both succeed the YAS-275 and YTS-275, and Yamaha has improved them in two ways: a more stable neck receiver and a better connection between the low B and C# keys. You can read what these improvements do in practice under the features below.

The choice between alto and tenor depends mainly on who will be playing. The alto is smaller and lighter, which makes it the logical start for most beginners and for children. The tenor sounds lower and fuller, but it is larger and needs more air. It suits adult beginners who specifically want to play tenor. Not sure? Try both in our test rooms in Ittervoort or Lummen.
