Luzier, Ray (USA)

ADAMS DRUMMERS FESTIVAL - 14 april 2013

Raymond Lee "Ray" Luzier (born June 14, 1970 in Pennsylvania) is an American drummer. He is the drummer of the band Korn, becoming a full-time member of the band in April 2009.

Ray Luzier was raised in West Newton, Pennsylvania, a small town an hour outside of Pittsburgh. He began playing drums at age five, and although mostly self-taught, he participated in high school jazz, concert, and marching bands.

After graduating in 1988, Luzier moved to Hollywood, California to study at the renowned Musicians Institute. He graduated in 1989 with a degree from MI's Percussion Institute of Technology. Luzier later returned as an instructor (1992, 2001), teaching rock drumming classes and giving private lessons.

Luzier is well known for his work with David Lee Roth, whom he played for from 1997 to 2005. He also performed with The Hideous Sun Demons, a progressive-rock / fusion trio with DLR bandmates Toshi Hiketa (guitar) and James LoMenzo (bass).

In 2004, Luzier released an instructional DVD through Hal Leonard Publishing Co. covering topics like double-bass technique, fills, motion exercises, and warm-ups.

In January 2006, Luzier performed at NAMM in Anaheim, California with Billy Sheehan and Toshi Hiketa. Robert and Dean DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots saw his performance and invited him to join Army of Anyone, their band with Filter’s Richard Patrick.

In 2007, after David Silveria left Korn (2006), Luzier auditioned with Munky and Fieldy. He was told to learn five songs, but learned thirty, impressing the band and securing his place.

Luzier’s first show with Korn was January 13, 2008 in Dublin, Ireland. He toured with them in 2008 and recorded their ninth studio album. Jonathan Davis confirmed him as an official member. In July, he was named “UltimateRockGods Artist of the Month.”

He also performed with Stone Temple Pilots during their October reunion tour, filling in for Eric Kretz. In November 2010, he recorded drums for the Japanese band Kat-Tun on “Change UR World,” their 13th Oricon number one hit.
