Thomas Lang (1967, Vienna, Austria) started drumming at the age of 5. His first lessons were with a classical percussionist from the Vienna orchestra, who taught him traditional grip and how to read music.
During his first year of drumming, he only had a snare drum, but for every birthday or Christmas he asked for something drum-related. He caught the pop music bug when he and some friends started a cover band playing songs by Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. They tried for two years to get gigs — unsuccessfully. He also played bongos in the choir where his mother sang and received his first pair of sticks for that.
Thomas only discovered jazz and fusion after enrolling at the Vienna Conservatory, where he met many passionate musicians and started performing in clubs and cafés.
After years of hard work and musical experience, in 1995 he ended up at the London School of Music, where he taught for two years.
Over the past decade, Thomas has recorded on numerous albums, given many masterclasses and clinics, and released several highly successful drum DVDs.
He plays Sonor drums, Meinl cymbals, Remo heads, and Vic Firth sticks, and relies on Hardcase for safe transport.
