Marcus – From Gospel Prodigy to World-Class Jazz Drummer

Like many American drummers, Marcus discovered his passion for music and drumming at a very young age in his local church. At just 2 years old, he couldn’t resist trying out the drums after the service. It didn’t take long before he became the official drummer of the gospel band, performing regularly in concerts.

During high school, Marcus met a friend who introduced him to jazz—ironically, with a track by the Yellowjackets, the very band he would later join. Though unfamiliar with the genre, Marcus was immediately captivated and took it on as his next big musical challenge.

After graduating, he received a scholarship to study for free at the Mannes School of Music in New York for a year—his first formal music education. This quickly led to gigs with various artists in the jazz scene. In 2000, Marcus joined the Yellowjackets, a top-tier band in the global jazz world.

Marcus plays Yamaha drums and Sabian cymbals.
