DWF 2014 - Chris Coleman

You won’t often experience such an inspiring clinic. Overflowing with energy, tons of chops, and a groove from here to Tokyo. The irresistible drummer who alternates between playing with Stevie Wonder, Sheila E., and Lee Ritenour. Chris Coleman. The great inspirer! On September 14, he will be on stage at the Drumworld Festival.

The great inspirer

If you’ve ever attended a Chris Coleman clinic, you know: unlike many other drummers, he’s not the kind to simply impress, take a few questions, and be done. No, he fully engages his audience. You’re invited to clap, count, respond, and interact. Through both performance and speech, he shares his principles and teaches how to become a better drummer and musician. Educational and entertaining.

In an interview with Slagwerkkrant, he said: "It’s about maintaining good relationships. There are enough good drummers in the world. Whether you play ‘less’ or ‘more’, it doesn’t matter to the artists you play with as long as they can get along with you, that you’re reliable, and give your all."

Everything Coleman does shows his 100% dedication. Whether signing autographs, talking to a brand rep, or doing a magazine interview—he’s fully in it. His gospel background plays a big part in this mindset. "In my church community, many drummers wanted to be in the band. So I had to become really good to hold my spot. And I gained a lot of live experience in the process."

The list of artists Coleman has worked with is endless. From Chaka Khan and Rachelle Ferrell to Beck, Prince, and Christina Aguilera. Most of them live. "I divide my time between live shows, studio work, clinics, and teaching. Mostly live—about forty percent, I’d say."

Check his Facebook page and you'll see an endless artist list. When asked if he plays with so many artists because of the economy, he replied: "It’s my personality. When I studied at Drummers Collective, I learned all styles and took them seriously. I love variety, challenge, and situations where I think, ‘wow, I’ve never done this, what do I need to do to succeed?’"

How does he keep track of all those gigs? "No problem. Once I’m booked, that date is blocked—nothing else comes in." Even if Stevie Wonder calls? "Yes, even then. Your word is your word."

Chris Coleman plays Sonor drums, Meinl cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, and Evans drumheads.
