Piccolo Headjoint

A piccolo headjoint has a significant influence on the sound, response, articulation and playing experience of a piccolo. Choosing a different headjoint allows you to adapt the playing characteristics of your instrument to your embouchure, playing style and musical preferences. It is therefore important to compare different piccolo headjoints on your own instrument.

Piccolo headjoints are available in various materials and designs. Wooden headjoints are made from woods including grenadilla, cocuswood, mopane, rosewood and kingwood. Metal models and headjoints combining different materials are also available. The type of wood, construction and shape of the embouchure hole each contribute to the character of the headjoint.

One important distinction is the design around the embouchure hole. A smooth or standard headjoint has an unprofiled surface. A reform headjoint, also known as a profile or wave headjoint, has a raised profile around the embouchure hole. This can provide a more direct response and easier articulation. Piccolo headjoints with a separate lip plate are also available.

Adams European Flute Centre offers an extensive collection of piccolo headjoints from specialist makers and established piccolo brands. Our flute specialists can help you compare materials, models and designs, with the opportunity to try different headjoints on your own piccolo.
