Testing a Flugelhorn
You're about to compare different flugelhorns, but how do you do that effectively? What should you bring, and what should you pay attention to?
The most important thing is to be well-informed. Know your budget, how long you intend to use the flugelhorn, and your skill level. As a beginner, it’s wise to choose a beginner or intermediate flugelhorn, while a professional model is more suited for experienced players.
Stay objective and don’t get caught up in the moment. It can help to bring another flugelhorn player along who can give an honest opinion about the sound. This player can also play the flugelhorn so you can hear how it sounds to your audience. If you don’t play the flugelhorn yet, hearing someone else play can help you understand the instrument’s potential.
What should you bring when testing a flugelhorn?
There are a few factors that can make it easier to make a good decision when trying out a flugelhorn.
Mouthpiece:
If you’ve been playing for a while and are looking for a new flugelhorn, bring the mouthpiece you currently use. The mouthpiece affects the sound, and to make a good comparison, it’s helpful to test all the flugelhorns with the same mouthpiece. At Adams, you can borrow a mouthpiece, but you should know which one you’re currently using.
Valve Oil and Slide Grease:
Especially when testing a used flugelhorn from a private seller, it’s important to bring valve oil and slide grease. The instrument may have been sitting unused for a while, and with valve oil and grease, you can often get the flugelhorn working properly again. If that doesn’t work, ask if you can have the flugelhorn checked by a repair technician.
