Peter Sadlo Percussion Week

Tribute to a Legendary Percussionist

Created by a group of Peter Sadlo's former colleagues, students and friends, the PSPW is a tribute to his life, artistry and lasting influence on the world of percussion. Hosted at Adams Musical Instruments, it brings together an exceptional faculty of internationally renowned soloists, principal timpanists, orchestral percussionists and educators for a unique week dedicated to learning, artistic exchange and inspiration.

Peter Sadlo (1962–2016)

Peter Sadlo was one of the most defining figures in the history of classical percussion, a virtuoso soloist, visionary teacher and inspiration to generations of percussionists worldwide. Through his performances, recordings, collaborations and teaching, he shaped generations of percussionists and left a lasting mark on the international percussion community.

Born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1962, Sadlo began his musical studies at the age of twelve before continuing his education with the legendary percussion pedagogue Siegfried Fink at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg. At just twenty years old, he was appointed Principal Timpanist of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for fifteen years before dedicating himself fully to a career as a soloist, chamber musician and educator.

Alongside his performing career, Sadlo served as Professor of Percussion at both the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. His influence as a teacher extended far beyond the classroom, with many of today's leading percussionists counting themselves among his students. He also held a Doctorate in Musicology from the University of Bucharest and received an Honorary Doctorate from the State Music Academy of Sofia.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Sadlo performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and appeared at major international festivals throughout Europe, Asia and beyond. He collaborated with distinguished artists including Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, Alice Sara Ott and Clemens Hagen, and regularly toured with his ensemble Peter Sadlo & Friends.

His artistic curiosity inspired numerous composers to write for him or collaborate closely with him, among them Luciano Berio, Sofia Gubaidulina, Hans Werner Henze, Moritz Eggert and Ferran Cruixent. Through these partnerships, he significantly expanded the contemporary percussion repertoire.

Throughout his career, Sadlo received many of the highest distinctions in classical music, including first prizes at both the Concours International de Genève and the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. He was named Echo Klassik Musician of the Year in 1998, received the European Cultural Award in Amsterdam, the Bavarian Culture Prize and, shortly before his passing, the prestigious Frankfurter Musikpreis.

Ten years after his death, Peter Sadlo's artistic and pedagogical legacy continues to inspire percussionists around the world. The Peter Sadlo Percussion Week was created by his former students and colleagues to honour that legacy and to pass his spirit of musical excellence, curiosity and generosity on to future generations.
