Workshop 1 - Rhythms from West Africa
Discover the rich musical culture of West Africa with percussionist, drummer and cultural musicologist Gijs Anders van Straalen. In countries such as Ghana, Togo and Mali, a wide variety of rhythms are played on many different types of drums, bells and other percussion instruments.
During this workshop, we will explore the similarities between the different types of West African music and play their grooves and rhythms. You will also learn about the instruments themselves, the people and the countries.
Gijs Anders van Straalen teaches at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. He regularly performs in the Netherlands and abroad with artists including Iris Hond, Wouter Hamel and Dieter van der Westen.
