Ralph van Daal

Ralph van Daal was born in Roermond, the Netherlands. He began learning the oboe at the age of nine. At just 17, he entered the conservatoire in Maastricht as a junior student, going on to study oboe with Prof. Peter Steyvers from 2001 to 2006.

He graduated with distinction. He also studied singing at the same institution with Prof. Mya Besselink. From 2006 to 2009, Ralph van Daal studied with Prof. Francois Leleux at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, graduating with a soloist diploma. His first fixed-term appointments took him to the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln and the Duisburger Philharmoniker. In 2011, he was appointed principal cor anglais on a permanent basis with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg. That same year, Simone Young, General Music Director of the Hamburger Staatsoper, selected him to receive the Eduard Söring-Preis, which supports the artistic development of young musicians.

He also regularly appears as guest principal oboe and principal cor anglais with orchestras including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Staatsoper Hannover, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the Bayerische Staatsoper München and the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Hilversum, under conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Semyon Bychkov, Jukka Pekka Saraste, Andris Nelsons, Ivan Fischer, Daniele Gatti and Kent Nagano.

As a soloist, he performs with orchestras such as the Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz, Sinfonia Varsovia, the Hofer Symphoniker and the Heritage Sinfonietta.

Ralph van Daal has given numerous masterclasses in Germany, Italy, Spain, Colombia, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, China and the Netherlands. He held professorships in oboe at the conservatoires in Rotterdam and Maastricht for several years. He is currently Professor of Oboe at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf.
