Kai Frömbgen

Born in 1977 in Koblenz, Kai Frömbgen received his first oboe lessons at the Conservatory of the City of Luxembourg under Norbert Mattern. In 1991, 1993, and 1995, he won first prize in the national German competition ‘Jugend musiziert’. After graduating from high school, he studied with Professor Christian Wetzel at the University of Music and Theatre "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig. He was awarded scholarships from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, Villa Musica, and the Richard Wagner Association.

In 1998 and 1999, he played in the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO). In 1999, he became associate principal oboist of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and in 2003, principal oboist of the Bamberg Symphony – Bavarian State Philharmonic. He has performed with renowned artists such as Frank-Peter Zimmermann, Christian Zacharias, Reinhold Friedrich, András Schiff, Christoph Eschenbach, and the Sabine Meyer Wind Ensemble. He is also a member of the Linos Ensemble.

As a soloist, he has appeared at leading festivals including the Rheingau Music Festival and the Lucerne Festival. In 2005, 2006, and 2007, he was principal oboist of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Claudio Abbado. In 2012, he joined the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, collaborating with conductors such as Bernard Haitink and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

In 2013, he was appointed professor of oboe at the University of Music in Saarbrücken, and in 2014 he moved to the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf. Since 2018, he has been professor at the University of Music, Drama and Media in Hanover. In the 2022/23 season, he was Artist in Residence at the Philharmonie Neubrandenburg.
