Julia de Leuw

Julia de Leuw began her oboe studies at the Conservatorium in Maastricht, where she studied with Hans Roerade and Peter Steyvers. She later continued her education with Liviu Varcol in Frankfurt. In 1991, she earned her Teaching Musician diploma.

Following a successful audition in Salzburg, Julia was appointed that same year as principal oboist with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under conductor Claudio Abbado. With this renowned youth orchestra, she toured across Europe. In 1993, she completed her Performing Musician diploma and was appointed principal oboist at the Kratiki Symphony Orchestra in Thessaloniki, Greece.

After four musical years in Greece, Julia returned to the Netherlands to further her orchestral career. In 1996, she joined the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn in Germany, performing in major concert halls in Germany and Spain.

From 1997 onwards, Julia expanded into musical theatre, performing in productions such as Cats, Annie, and Les Misérables. In 1998, she joined the European Community Chamber Orchestra, which rehearsed in London and Oxford and performed worldwide – in Canada, the USA, Mexico, the UAE, China, and many European countries.

In 2001, Julia auditioned for Il Novecento, the orchestra behind The Night of the Proms. With Il Novecento, she toured Europe and performed alongside internationally renowned pop artists. She remained a core member of this orchestra until the pandemic.

In addition, Julia worked regularly with Joop van den Ende Theater Productions, playing in musicals such as Ciske de Rat, Tarzan, Wicked, The Little Mermaid, and Joseph. Today, she is active as a freelance oboist with various orchestras and toured last year with Il Volo.

Since 2012, Julia has also been working as a conductor for several youth orchestras, a role she fulfills with great passion. She also teaches oboe at the music schools of Weert, Heinsberg, and Cultuurperron.
