Reed Adjustment Tools
There are several tools you can use to adjust a reed.
Reed working tools
Dutch Rush
Dutch rush is a plant used as very fine sandpaper to adjust reeds. This plant acts as extremely delicate sandpaper and is available in most music stores. Instead of Dutch rush, you can also use very fine sandpaper with a grit of at least 600.
Scalpel or Reed Knife
For certain adjustments, a sharp knife is necessary. Special reed knives are available for this purpose, but a sharp barber's razor or a straight scalpel from an art store can work just as well.
ReedGeek
A ReedGeek is designed to replace all reed adjustment tools in one device. Essentially, you can perform all reed adjustments you need with the ReedGeek.
Most reed trimmers work by securing the reed onto the trimmer using a flexible steel strip. The length of the reed can be adjusted with a small gear and a knob. Once the reed is set to the desired length, you pull a small lever to trim the tip.
