Starting with the Recorder
Is your child about to begin recorder lessons? On this page, you’ll find everything you need to get started! From the recorder itself to music stands, lesson materials, and recorder swabs.
The recorder
For nearly every beginner, and especially children aged 6 or 7, the soprano recorder is the perfect starting point. This instrument is ideal for small hands, allowing all the finger holes to be comfortably covered. The soprano recorder is the standard choice for most teaching methods.
German or Baroque Fingering?
Most recorder brands use two fingering systems: German fingering and Baroque fingering. The German fingering is the most common choice because it makes playing easier for beginners. Most teachers recommend a recorder with German fingering. However, we advise you to always consult with your own teacher first to ensure you choose the instrument that matches your lessons.
Instructional materials
A good instruction book is just as important as the instrument itself. Modern methods emphasize fun, rhythm, and quickly learning to play recognizable songs. Ask your recorder teacher which method they use. If it’s not listed below, please send an email to [email protected]. These are exclusively Dutch-language instructional methods.
Instructional Methods
Many instruction books include audio tracks (via CD or download). Use these tracks! They help your child maintain rhythm and make simple pieces sound professional right away.
Accessories to Start Recorder Lessons
A complete starter set includes more than just the flute and the book. These accessories ensure hygiene, protection, and a healthy posture while playing.
Maintenance & Hygiene for recorder
Cleaning your recorder after every use removes moisture and extends its lifespan. Your teacher will show you exactly how to clean your recorder properly.
Recorder Cases and Music Bags
A sturdy bag is essential to protect the instrument, especially during transport to school or lessons.
The correct posture for playing the recorder
To learn the correct posture, it is important that the sheet music is easy to read. Therefore, a table-top music stand or a regular music stand is also essential.
